Naturescaping: Landscaping Based on Nature

Many gardeners today understand the importance of planting native plants in restoring our environment. This workshop builds on this idea by explaining how homeowners can help restore natural habitats by planting groups of species that grow together in nature. Beginning with observation of nature, the workshop covers important Northeastern ecosystems (prairies, red maple swamps, and oak-hickory forests), describing each one in detail and explaining what to plant to recreate it.

Elaine Silverstein is certified in Sustainable Landscape Management by the New York Botanical Garden; she has also earned the Urban Naturalist certificate and continues to study botany, ecology, and landscape design. She maintains a horticulture practice in Bergen County where she advises clients on sustainability, garden design, and installing and caring for native plantings. She is a vice president of the Native Plant Society of New Jersey and co-leader of the Bergen-Passaic chapter. She lives in Glen Rock, where she is a member of the Environmental Commission.

Free to the public.
