SPRING 2008 NEWS: Important Notice: The James Rose Center has been officially notified by the Village of Ridgewood that our activities are in violation of the town’s zoning ordinance and that we must cease to offer any tours, lectures, internships or educational programs of any kind at the Center. We will continue to offer our student scholarships, document modern landscape architecture and conduct research from an off-site location, while we appeal the Village’s action. The Board of the Center believes that preserving this internationally-recognized work of environmental art depends upon providing public access to it and continuing its use for public education and service. We further believe that such activities enhance, rather than jeopardize the residential zone in which the center lies. Our appeal to the Village should have a hearing with the Ridgewood Board of Adjustment in late Spring of 2008. We believe this is an opportunity to demonstrate the merits of the center as a community resource and are hopeful of a positive outcome, so that we may continue to preserve and use this historic designed environment to serve students, scholars and the general public soon thereafter. Meanwhile, of course, we are complying with the Village’s order. If you are interested in visiting the center or participating in any of our programs, or if you have any questions regarding the status of our appeal to the Village, please write to director@jamesrosecenter.org or call 210. 446. 6017 for an update. |

Phase I of the Bear’s Nest exemplifies the imaginative responsiveness to existing conditions and strong inside/outside spatial relations that are characteristic of the work of both Petterson and Rose. The rehabilitation plan will be used by the Bear’s Nest governing board to guide maintenance and future development. |

Tree Falls on Roof Garden: A strong localized storm caused an 80 foot tree to fall on the Roof Garden at the James Rose Center. While the roof survived intact, the Roof Garden was damaged and required extensive repairs. For the most part these have been made, and the Northern section of the roof garden should be reconstructed by the end of May. Preservation Efforts at the Center: Current preservation projects include completion of rehabilitation of the Buddha Garden, rebuilding the “pole arrangement” fence, and repair of the delicate woven fences on the northern side of the property. |
